Pest control and exterminators in Darien, CT

Darien, CT residents sent CAES 109 ticks in 2025, but only 37 could be tested, because the state lab tests only blacklegged ticks that fed on a person; 22% of those carried Lyme bacteria. Mail a tick that bit someone with the state form linked from the Health Department’s tick page, and call 203-656-7320 with questions.

Found a tick or a nest right now?

  1. Tick bite: save the tick. Save it dry in a sealed bag; send it to CAES for free testing through your health department or by mail. See a doctor if a rash or fever follows. Mail it to CAES in a zip-top bag with the state form linked from the Health Department's tick page; testing is free. details about tick drop-off in Darien
  2. Nest by the door: keep back. Keep people and pets away from the nest; trouble breathing or hives all over need medical care right away.
  3. Droppings: air the room, then wet-clean. Air the room for 30 minutes, wear gloves and soak droppings with disinfectant or bleach before wiping; never sweep or vacuum them.
  4. Suspected bed bugs: report it. Renters tell the landlord, who has five business days to inspect; homeowners ask a DEEP-registered pest control company to inspect.

Pest control services in Darien

Darien does not run a tick drop-off; the Health Department’s page sends residents to the state lab directly. Fill in the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES) form, put the tick in a zip-top bag labeled with the name of the person bitten, and mail it. Write your email address clearly, because the result arrives from “CAES Tick Testing” and can land in a spam folder. Before mailing, check that the tick is a blacklegged tick that has fed; a flat or crawling tick will be identified but not tested.

For the house itself, the age of Darien’s housing shapes the list. More than half of the homes predate 1960, so the wood-to-soil contact and damp framing that inspectors and CAES fact sheets flag deserve a look before any treatment. In the fall, brown marmorated stink bugs look for winter shelter in buildings; they are a nuisance, and some of the first Connecticut specimens came from Darien.

For mice, CT DEEP’s rodent management page favors exclusion and traps. It says mice are easily caught with snap traps set along walls and baited with peanut butter, warns that poison baits can leave rodents dying in places you cannot reach, and calls the idea that they leave the building to find water an old wives’ tale.

Any pesticide job for hire calls for a certified applicator at a business registered with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), whose number must appear on the contract and in its advertising under CGS 22a-66c. The site itself treats nothing and points to no company, as its editorial page sets out. Each guide below, with the Darien angle:

Nearby towns: Norwalk, which shares Darien’s early stink bug record, lies to the east; Stamford’s city tick lab is the next town west; and beyond it, Greenwich runs a fee-based tick lab of its own. The fall invaders guide deals with stink bugs indoors.

Why pests in Darien start with older houses

Why were only 37 of Darien’s 109 ticks tested?

Darien’s other 72 ticks did not meet the CAES bar for testing: the lab tests only blacklegged ticks that fed on a person. Its submission page says ticks taken from pets, unfed ticks, larvae and males are identified and not tested. Darien residents sent 109 blacklegged ticks in 2025 and 37 met that bar, by the CAES 2025 tick testing summary, the lowest tested share of the county’s 23 towns. Of the 37, 8 carried the Lyme bacterium (22%). In 2024, 8 of 28 tested were positive (29%), from 62 submitted, by the 2024 summary. With samples this small, a few ticks move the percentage several points, so neither figure is a reliable read of local risk. Identification alone still has value: it tells you which tick bit you, and a doctor can use that.

When did West Nile virus show up at Darien’s Brush Island Road trap?

From late July to early September in 2025. The 2025 final CAES summary lists West Nile virus in 8 samples from the Brush Island Road trap: one each on July 29 and August 11, four on August 26 and two on September 9. The same trap then caught mosquitoes carrying Jamestown Canyon virus, a different virus spread by mosquitoes, on September 23 and October 7. The High School Lane trap added 5 West Nile positives, so Darien’s two trap sites had 13 that season. The dates line up with CAES’s mosquito brochure, which puts the greatest risk of human infection from July to September. The late-season Jamestown Canyon finds are a reason not to put the repellent away on Labor Day.

What should owners of Darien’s older houses check for termites and carpenter ants?

The places where wood meets soil or water. Darien’s median year built is 1956; 27.4% of homes predate 1940 and 56.4% predate 1960, by the Census Bureau’s year-built counts. The NPMA-33 inspection form lists conditions that invite infestation, including earth-to-wood contact, faulty grade, improper drainage, firewood against the house, wood debris in a crawlspace, wood mulch touching the structure and tree branches touching it. An inspector may treat a crawl space with less than 24 inches of clearance as inaccessible, and will not pull up floors or siding. For carpenter ants, the CAES carpenter ant fact sheet names the attachment points of porches, chimneys, garages and decks. With 85.1% of housing units detached, by the units-in-structure count, most owners handle this house by house.

Did the stink bugs on Darien houses really start here?

Darien was among the first places they were found in Connecticut. When CAES announced the brown marmorated stink bug as a new agricultural pest on December 2, 2010, the first specimens had come from several towns, Darien and Norwalk among them, according to the agency’s press release. That makes Darien one of the earliest stink bug records in the state. The release describes an insect that moves into houses and other buildings in the fall for shelter and does “not bite or sting.” So a Darien homeowner who finds them gathering on the house in the fall is dealing with an entry-point and annoyance problem. The concern CAES raised in 2010 was for farms and orchards. The fall invaders guide explains how to keep them out.

Where can a Darien renter turn about bed bugs?

To the landlord first, then the Health Department. Darien’s renters are a minority, 17.6% of occupied homes by the Census Bureau’s tenure count, but the state law covers any rented unit that is not a detached single-family house. Under CGS 47a-7a, a landlord may not offer a unit for rent that the landlord knows or reasonably suspects is infested, and must tell a prospective tenant whether the unit or any adjoining unit the landlord owns is infested now. Once treatment starts, infested belongings stay in the unit until the pest control agent says treatment is complete or the landlord agrees. The Health Department’s healthy homes page links a bed bug presentation, and EPA’s bed bug guidance opens with “Don’t panic!”

Ticks and mosquitoes in Darien

Darien residents sent CAES 109 blacklegged ticks in 2025, up from 62 in 2024. Only 37 were tested, and 8 of those (22%) carried Borrelia burgdorferi, per the 2025 summary; the 2024 rate was 8 of 28 (29%), per the 2024 summary. The rise in submissions reflects more people sending ticks, and the small tested sample means the Lyme share can swing. For people, CDC’s Lyme dataset counts 534 cases in 2023 for the Western Connecticut planning region, which includes Darien; it gives no town figure.

Darien’s two mosquito traps, on Brush Island Road and High School Lane, had 13 West Nile virus-positive samples in 2025, as the section above details. In 2026 the count to October 13 was 7, with 3 at Brush Island Road and 4 at High School Lane, per the 2026 summary. Each positive is a pooled set of mosquitoes from one trap, not a count of insects. The Health Department’s vector-borne disease page links the state’s mosquito program and CAES testing results. The tick season guide and the downloadable CSV set Darien beside the other seven towns.

Exterminator prices and registration checks for Darien

How much does a termite inspection or treatment cost in Darien?

Nobody publishes a Darien or Connecticut figure, so any number is national. Bob Vila puts termite or other wood-destroying insect inspections at $100 to $290 (national data, as of September 2024), and This Old House puts termite treatment at $250 to $1,000 (national data, as of March 2026). This Old House also recommends an estimate from at least three companies; for an older Darien house, ask each to mark the same conducive conditions on a written report. The pest control cost guide has more.

What must a Darien pest company tell you before it sprays?

Before agreeing to apply a pesticide, the business must give you the product name, its EPA registration number, active ingredients, precautions and reentry information, under CGS 22a-66a, and post a sign for an outdoor job within 100 yards of a property line. Its DEEP registration number belongs on the contract; DEEP’s lookup instructions show how to check it, no account needed.

Frequently asked questions

Are there stink bugs in Connecticut?

Yes. CAES announced the brown marmorated stink bug's arrival in the state on December 2, 2010, with early specimens from towns including Darien and Norwalk. It gathers on and in buildings in the fall looking for winter shelter. CAES says it does not bite or sting, and announced it as a new agricultural pest.

Why wasn't my Darien tick tested?

CAES tests only blacklegged ticks that have fed on a person. Ticks from pets, unfed ticks, larvae and males are identified but not tested. That is why only 37 of the 109 ticks Darien residents sent in 2025 were tested. Mail the tick dry, with the CAES form, and note the date of the bite.

When is West Nile virus season in Darien?

Mostly midsummer to early fall. In 2025 the CAES trap on Brush Island Road found West Nile virus in samples collected from July 29 to September 9, and Jamestown Canyon virus on September 23 and October 7. CAES says the greatest risk of human infection runs from July through September.

Who do I call about pests or ticks in Darien?

The Darien Health Department, 2 Renshaw Road, Room 109, at 203-656-7320. Town Hall is open Monday to Thursday, 8:00 am to 5:15 pm, and closed Fridays. The department's tick page links the CAES form for mailing a tick, and its healthy homes page has a bed bug presentation.
